Paul Kelner, LCSW-C, CSAT, CAMS

I began my professional career in 1980 when I became executive director of a residential program for young people suffering from severe mental illness.

I’ve also worked as a counselor in community-based criminal offender rehabilitation programs in New Jersey and the District of Columbia, a human resources development and training consultant in private and non-profit organizations, a divorce and family mediator and a therapist in an outpatient mental health treatment center.

Paul Kelner, LCSW-C, CSAT, CAMS

In the late 2000's, I started receiving calls for help from men who were struggling with excessive pornography viewing, compulsive masturbation, prostitution and other risky sexual behaviors.

After meeting with these men, I realized that (1) many more individuals than I realized were jeopardizing their lives, marriages and careers by engaging in compulsive, out-of-control sexual behaviors, and, (2) despite my years of professional training and experience in mental health and other disciplines, I needed specialized training to help those with sexual and pornography addictions.

To obtain the training I needed, I became a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist (CSAT) through the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals (IITAP). IITAP was established by Patrick Carnes, Ph.D., an internationally recognized pioneer in sexual addiction treatment and research who published the seminal book on sexual addiction, Out of the Shadows, in 1983. Since I completed my CSAT training, I've worked with many men and women who are now recovering from sexual and pornography addictions.

I also am trained and certified as an Anger Management Specialist (CAMS) by the National Anger Management Association.

I graduated with highest honors from the University of Maryland’s School of Social Work. I’ve received postgraduate training in Family Systems Therapy (Georgetown University Hospital Family Center), Individual Psychotherapy (Washington School of Psychiatry), Motivational Interviewing and Interpersonal Psychotherapy (University of Iowa Medical School).

My professional affiliations include membership in the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals,  the National Anger Management Association, the Greater Washington Society of Clinical Social Workers, the Montgomery County, Maryland Mental Health Association and the National Association of Social Workers.
